چکیده

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common multi-factorial disorder affecting approximately 12% of the populations worldwide resulting in significant global morbidity1. Approximately one in ten patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) believes that their IBS began with an infectious illness. The persistence of these symptoms about the clearance of infecting pathogen is known as post infectious IBS (PI-IBS). The current conceptual framework regarding the patho-physiological mechanism of PI-IBS suggests that PI-IBS is associated with altered motility, increased intestinal permeability, increase numbers of enterochromaffin cells and persistent intestinal inflammation, characterized by increased number of T-lymphocytes and mast cells and increased expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines. This therefore suggests that an exposure to pathogenic organism disrupts intestinal barrier function alter neuromuscular function and triggers chronic inflammation causing sustain IBS symptoms.

Post-Infectious Irritable Bowel Syndrome, an Inflammation-Immunological Model with Relevance for Other IBS and Functional Dyspepsia

This review presents studies that support an inflammation-immunological model for the pathogenesis of post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and highlights recent studies that support a similar disease model in non-post-infectious IBS, in particular, diarrhoea-predominant IBS, as well as in post-infectious functional dyspepsia. These recent studies are highlighted to demonstrate that o...

Post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome (PI-IBS) is a common disorder wherein symptoms of IBS begin after an episode of acute gastroenteritis. Published studies have reported incidence of PI-IBS to range between 5% and 32%. The mechanisms underlying the development of PI-IBS are not fully understood, but are believed to include persistent sub-clinical inflammation, changes in intestinal permea...

inflammatory component of IBS. A proportion of patients with diarrhea-predominant IBS recall acute infectious enteritis as a boot for the onset of their symptoms, and 7%-33% of patients with acute bacterial enteritis will experience IBS symptoms for over 6 months. A chronic latent inflammation has been documented in mucosal biopsies of these patients. Post-infectious IBS (PI-IBS) has been linke...

Almost all irritable bowel syndromes are post-infectious and respond to probiotics: consensus issues.

Several reports have described post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome (Pi-IBS), while many animal and human studies have shown the presence of increased infiltration of inflammatory cells and hyperplasia of enterochromaffin cells in the intestinal mucosa after acute gastroenteritis. The potential value of probiotic bacteria in restoring normal gut function has been demonstrated by animal mode...
